I usually put my windows computer to sleep when I am not working, or taking a break. But, since yesterday, when I click the sleep button, my computer can not go to sleep. Can someone help?

This is a common problem and some of the solutions I have explained below:

1. Check all your hardware devices that are attached to your computer. They should have appropriate latest drivers installed in them.

2. Check your settings of power off/sleep from the settings menu of your computer. Sometimes, they may be reset to “never” in “when does the computer sleep” option. Put this to a finite number of minutes, for example 15 minutes, then wait that time.

Your computer should start going to sleep now.

This problem can happen if the Power Option setting was modified. To fix the problem, check the settings in the Control Panel. Click “Start”, “Control Panel” then “Power Options”. If you don’t see this, set view to “Small icons”. In “Select a power plan” screen, select “Change when the computer sleeps” on the left pane.

On the next screen, click “Change advanced power settings”. In “Power Options” dialog, scroll down and expand “Power buttons and lid” then expand “Sleep button action”. Here, “Setting” should say either “Sleep” or “Hibernate”. If the setting says “Do nothing” then that’s the cause of the problem. Click “Setting” then select “Sleep” from the dropdown list and then click “OK”.

Configure the Sleep button action

After this, the “Sleep” button should now work.
