I have a Logitech webcam and I'm trying to connect it to my laptop but it won't work. It shows it as an unknown device and not a webcam. I've removed the software and then reinstalled it but it still doesn't work. Help?

Have tried updating webcam driver? Check the manufacturer's websites for the latest update for your system. It is also noticeable that you are using Window Vista, so you may better look for the webcam driver that is compatible with Vista.

Installing a Logitech camera is not the same with other camera. You should not connect the camera first and then install. It’s the other way around you should not connect the camera then install it to your laptop. But for you to have it installed properly you should have some kind of recording software. Or if your just using it for instant messenger it doesn’t need a recording software it’s as good to go.

If it isn’t properly installed you should go to start then control panel choose Add/Remove programs look for Logitech then you uninstall it. Try to check the task manager and cancel all tasks before installing again. If you could restart computer before doing the reinstalling process.

Hi,

Please let me know it works earlier or is this the first time you are going to connect your web cam.

It is ok. Not to worry.

  • First of all check the web cam cable whether it is not damaged.
  • Then read the software guide in your web cam, whether is it supported to your Operating system.
  • If it is not supporting your web cam it will makes problem.
  • Sometimes because of the problems in the web cam it will shows as an unknown. Insert your web cam to another laptop or to another computer to check the web cam. If it is works nicely then you have to check your laptop.
  • As another problem there can be some viruses in your laptop. Please check that also.
  • And also it can be a problem in USB port in your laptop. Please plug the web cam to another USB port and check or connect a different USB port equipment such as Mouse, Keyboard, printer etc. to the USB port which you connect your web cam.

I also had that same issue with my c160 Logitech webcam before. What I did was I removed the webcam cable from the USB port, uninstalled my current version of the Logitech Webcam Software then did a clean boot on my pc. While doing the clean boot. I immediately plugged my webcam to the port (try using another port) and it immediately recognized my webcam.

     Further steps to troubleshoot:

      – Try using the Auto-detect from the Logitech Support Page.

      – Install the LWS 1.1 (32-bit/64-bit) while in clean boot mode.

      – Also try updating the drivers of your webcam.

               1. Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager
               2. Drop down the category "Imaging Devices"
               3. Right-click on your webcams listing
               4. Click Update Driver and Search Automatically
               5. Drop down the category "Sound Video and Game Controllers"
               6. Right-click your webcam's MIC listing
               7. Select Update Driver and Search Automatically

      – If you found the updates but still the issue continues, you can go ahead in uninstalling and installing your webcam.

               1. Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager
               2. Drop down the category "Imaging Devices"
               3. Right-click on your webcams listing
               4. Select Uninstall
               5. Drop down the category "Sound Video and Game Controllers"
               6. Right-click your webcam's MIC listing
               7. Select Uninstall
               8. Unplug your webcam
               9. Restart your PC
               10. Plug your webcam back into the USB port
