I found this error on my MSN messenger 8  when I tried to login. My service provider is AOL. Every time I try to login, an error popped- up which states  that  page cannot be displayed.

Error Code: 80072efd

Does anyone know the reason for the error and provide solution as well?

If you are unable to sign into MSN messenger, the connection settings might prevent you from connecting to .NET passport or messenger service. The messenger troubleshooter can often find and fix the problem and even starts automatically when such a situation appears. However, if troubleshooter did not solve the problem in your case, then you can do it manually by following these steps:

1. Click tools menu and then options.

2. Click connection

3. Click test connection (it will perform a test for your connection problems and report steps that you can take to correct them.)

4. Click OK and try signing in to messenger again.

Also, if there is no server problems then see whether your proxy settings are correct or not. If you are on a large network then your administrator can explain you whether you should have proxy settings in messenger.

Also, check whether your messenger is set to auto detects LAN settings and if not, then put it to auto detect. Do you have any firewall installed in your system? If yes, then either put it to offline mode or uninstall it and see whether the problem is solved or not. If you have windows XP firewall then messenger needs to be in your list.

If your IE is also not working, then MSN will never work and that means the error is in your antivirus. Simply uninstall it and keep a less troublesome antivirus with you. Restart your system and try checking for the connection once again.

There are many possibilities in here and you might want to check the solution below:

Solution 1:

Check the MSN official website and then try to browse everything on it. Also go to their support and contact them if they have any problems regarding you, logging in to their messenger.

Solution 2:

Also make sure that you can browse the internet or else, it is probably the providers problem that prevents you from connecting. It is only normal as sometime the ISPs are susceptible to malfunctions as well or they need to perform maintenance. If that is the case contact them.

Soluion 3:

Check your network and see if you are really connected. You can also try repairing your connection or type the following command in the command prompt:

  • ipconfig /all
  • ipconfig /flushdns
  • ipconfig /release
  • ipconfig /renew

To open command prompt, Start, Run and then type CMD.
