MS outlook suddenly stopped working

Hello there! My computer is running on Windows 7 64-bit version and I am using Microsoft Outlook 2010 32-bit version. I had this problem with Outlook when it suddenly stopped working.  I clicked on the icon to start it and it starts normally although its window does not display. Instead, I see an icon on the toolbar that allows me to perform all other tasks such as email, apps, when I right-click it. I’m not receiving any error messages at all and I was able to start it while the computer is on Safe Mode. I have tried resetnavpane, uninstalling and reinstalling, and regedit to delete the profiles as seen in other posts but none of them worked for me. Do you guys have an idea how I could fix this? If so, I would appreciate your reply. Thank you.

You can get a feasible solution of your problem by following the steps which are given below:

  1. Would you try to go back to your old ways to a time when Outlook 2010 was working fine at the time of using the system restore.
  2. You can also try to navigate to c:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice14. For Windows 7 64 bit versions: c:Program Files(x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice14. Right click Outlook.exe then go to the compatibility tab, Check if there is a check for ' Run this program in compatibility mode for' windows xp some other operating system.

I am very optimistic that we shall be able to solve this problem. If you cannot solve the problem, please feel free to ask us again and again.

When you uninstalled your Outlook application, did you completely uninstall it and then do a restart then reinstall the entire application? If you did not, kindly go through the process again and completely remove the application first before reinstalling it. When was the last time that it worked? Did it work recently? If it did, you can try doing System Restore. Go to Start then search for System Restore. Choose a date when the application was working ok. If this does not work, try disabling your non-Microsoft services and startup items. Since the application works in Safe Mode as you mentioned, the problem is most likely caused by one of your background applications.

If you are using Microsoft Office Outlook as email client and it is no longer working properly, first, try to access your email account from a web browser to verify that it is accessible. If you can log in to your email account from a web browser but not with Microsoft Office Outlook, try to uninstall and reinstall.

If you have the entire Microsoft Office suite installed, click “Start”, “Control Panel” then “Programs and Features”. If you don’t see this, set the view to “Small icons” on the upper right corner of the screen. On the next screen, scroll down and right-click “Microsoft Office” then select “Change”. On the next screen, make sure “Add or Remove Features” is selected then click “Continue”.

In “Installation Options” screen, right-click “Microsoft Outlook” and select “Not Available”. Click “Continue” then follow the instructions. Restart the computer then repeat the same steps until you reach the “Installation Options” screen. Now, right-click “Microsoft Outlook” again and select “Run from My Computer”. Click “Continue” then wait until it is complete. See if this works. If the problem continues, check the IMAP or POP settings again.

Check with your mail service provider for the correct configurations. For Yahoo Mail account, here are the correct IMAP and POP server settings. For IMAP server settings, make sure you have the following configurations entered in Microsoft Office Outlook.

  • Incoming server IMAP:
    • Server – imap.mail.yahoo.com
    • Port – 993
    • Requires SSL – Yes
  • Outgoing server SMTP:
    • Server – smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    • Port – 465 or 587
    • Requires SSL – Yes
    • Requires authentication – Yes

For POP server settings, make sure you have the following configurations entered in Microsoft Office Outlook.

  • Incoming server POP:
    • Server – pop.mail.yahoo.com
    • Port – 995
    • Requires SSL – Yes
  • Outgoing server SMTP:
    • Server – smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    • Port – 465 or 587
    • Requires SSL – Yes
    • Requires TLS – Yes (if available)
    • Requires authentication – Yes
