I am using Windows XP and Office 2000. I have saved my personal income and expenses for whole the year in an Excel file. Now the Excel file doesn’t open. I have only saved the file in a flash drive.

How can I open the file? Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Hello there

First of all, you have to create backup of that file, so you can try to change it. Best this for you would be to create a copy on a hard drive. So, right click on Excel – Copy, then right click on the desktop – Paste. From there you can try the following: Maybe you did accidentally save Excel file in different format? Try right clicking on the file and choosing Properties to see what kind of format is it. If is not .xls, try to change the format manually. Click on the name of the file, press F2, and on the end of the file just add .xls, which will automatically change your file to Excel file.

Hope this helps.

Hello Nathan,

Thank you for asking that question. As what I see the file you have save in your flash drive may be corrupted. Maybe your using your flash drive inappropriately like when you insert it in the USB port then after using it you directly remove it from the computer by not clicking the "safely remove hardware or Eject Media" command. This is some of the reasons that may cause your file to be corrupted.
