Mouse pointer moves randomly on the screen

I am working with my assignment in Power Point.

While designing a slide my mouse pointer moves at no specific direction on the screen.

The mouse also clicked itself on the items whenever the mouse points in.

To solve the problem I bang the mouse on my desk repeatedly until rattling stops.

What should I do with my mouse?

Your mouse cable might be worn out or damaged. Check the mouse cable near the mouse if you see a swollen part on the cable or looks like there is a cut inside the tube of the cable. Also check the mouse cable connected at the back of your computer. Your mouse might be connected on to the serial port or at the USB port of your computer. Just check both ends in the same manner.

If you have found swollen wires or cuts on the cable, you may cut the part and splice the wires according to their color then wrap the splices with electrical tape to avoid grounding of wires.

If you have skills on soldering techniques, you may also solder the wires of your mouse directly on the mouse board or even on the mouse connector just find yourself how to open the mouse body and the mouse connector. Be sure you taken notes on the wires connected to each pin on the mouse board.

If you can’t fix with the solutions above, purchase a new mouse.

Do have a radio or any wireless gadget near your PC?

If you connect the wired mouse does it show the same behaviors? If the PC is moved to another room is the behavior still the same?

Also check the selected mouse sensitivity on the windows XP control panel area by going to Start> Control Panel> Mouse then select pointer options tab and check if those settings affect the visible behavior of the mouse.

So the problem is temporarily resolved by banging the mouse on the desk?

If this is the case, then the problem should be caused by the hardware itself, this wouldn't be a software problem otherwise it would have required you to change settings on the computer or update software or drivers on the computer to get it to work.

That said, try using a known working mouse. If the known working mouse works fine in your system, then it would definitely mean that you need to have your current mouse replaced.

Otherwise if a known working mouse still has the same problem, then it could be the surface where the mouse is placed (it could cause the mouse pointer to not respond and then respond making it seem like it's jumping or being unresponsive) or it could be the port where the mouse is connected to.
