Hi Elijah,

"Index.dat" are hidden files located on your computer which contains all of your visited websites.

To fix it you can:

  1. Reinstall associated program and then you must reboot your computer.
  2. You can also just copy and replace "index.dat" file from another computer, but the system must be the same.

Hi Elijah,

index.dat file is a database file which comprises of important information pertaining to URLs, search queries and files that were recently accessed. The use of this file is to help quick retrieval of data that is used by the browser.

You can try the following paths to locate your index.dat file in case it was deleted by programs such as Red Button, CCleaner, Index.dat Suite etc.

C:UsersRoamingMicrosoftWindowsCookiesindex.dat

C:UsersRoamingMicrosoftWindowsCookiesLowindex.dat

C:UsersLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5index.dat

C:UsersRoamingMicrosoftInternet ExplorerUserDataindex.dat

Running the application again recreates the index.dat file.

Hope this was helpful.
