In our work environment we are running an exchange server 2000 but we are looking to migrate to server 2008 in the near future. The current server has an active directory, DNS and DHCP running, I am now wondering if we shall have the ability of moving these roles to the new server. I would really appreciate if someone would help me out on a way to do this.

Three steps to follow in your issue,

1-First you need to add the new server to the domain and then shift to the new one.

It is easier for you and the clients can also continue work all the time. It would be better not in place upgrades.

2-Upgradation will be required to Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) from Windows 2000 Active Directory Domain Controllers or later on first you need to run adprep.

3- Earlier than installing the first Windows Server 2008 DC you must need to run adprep /domainprep /gpprep.

After following these steps you will not face such problem, then  you can easily  migrate server 2000 to server 2008.

Feel free to ask if any problem.
