Hi,
This problem generally occurs because of compatibility issues in according with opening old version document files. Following are the steps given to fix your issue:-

Click on file->open->browse to the location where the word documents are located.

Click on the file you want to open.

Click on the open drop down arrow.
-
Select open and repair and wait if required.
 After the document is opened in word 2010 save it as a docx file . This process will remove your compatibility issues.
