The following steps below will give a way of doing the conversion.

– Step 1: You first of all need to have a Microsoft VHD file and also you need a VMware Converter 4 standalone.

– Step 2: Create a folder in any location in your computer, copy the .vhd file and paste it in the newly created folder.

– Step 3: Conversion using VMware converter needs a VMC file. So download a this file here and rename it as with extension .vmc and paste it in your folder you created.

– Step 4: Open the file you downloaded with any text editor and edit the path to your .vhd file.

 – Step 5: Now, Launch VMware Converter 4 standalone and click on Convert Machine.

 – Step 6: Select source type: Backup image or third-party virtual machine and Virtual Machine file: The path to your .vhd file.

– Step 7: Click on Next and choose the following parameters:
-> Select destination type: VMware Workstation or other VM virtual machine.
-> Select VMware product: VMware Workstation 7.0.x

– Step 8: After this, check if Install VMware tools is set to YES. If so, then click next and double check all information and then click finish and hold on for the process to complete.

– Step 9: Go back to your working folder(the folder you created) and check. There will be a .vmx file in it. From there, you can start your workstation.

– Step 10: Launch the virtual machine and logon to it, it will install some drivers related to your VMware and after that the virtual will restart itself. After this, you have to reactivate the copy of windows you are using, once this is done re-launch your virtual machine and enjoy.

If you have a VHD file (*.vhd) and you need to convert it to VMX format (*.vmx), here’s one way. Download a version of WinImage and install it. It supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Once installed, start WinImage then go to “Disk” then “Convert Virtual Hard Disk Image.”

In file type, select “Virtual Hard Disk (*.vhd)” then navigate to the location of your VHD file, select it, and then click “Open” to load it. On the next screen, select either “Create Fixed Size Virtual Hard Disk” or “Create Dynamically Expanding Virtual Hard Disk.” In file type, select “VMware VMDK (*.vmdk)” then select the folder where you want to save the file and then click “Save.”

Wait until the process is complete and you’re done. VHD stands for Virtual Hard Disk. It is a disk file format designed to store the complete contents of a hard drive.
