Mic is not working when I plug in the earpiece

Hi all,

I am having Sony Xperia S Tablet and I have been using it since the last one year. Everything is fine so far. I never tried to use ear piece for Skype.

Today when I plug in the earphone, the internal mic got disabled and the receiver can't hear what I am saying. I have shown it to the Sony device center and they said the problem with the ear piece itself and hence I bought a new earpiece but with that one also the problem still persists. Hence, I feel that this is a hardware issue with tablet. There is no warranty for my tablet.

Any suggestions what I have to do in order to rectify the problem?

Hi Louis,

I have read your issue that you are experiencing with your Sony Xperia S Tablet.

Well, the problem can arise because of your Hardware (damaged Earphone port of your tablet, unsupported Earphone etc.). Or it can also arise from your Skype version and Android Version.

For hardware issues:

1. Check whether your earphone port is working fine. As a Sony customer center told you already that the problem is with your Earphone, you probably don't have issues with the Tablet.

2. Check whether you are using a supported Earphone. If you are using a branded earphone, check from their website under supported devices. Only having a 3.5mm jack doesn't ensure that every earphone will be supported by the device.

For Software issues:

If you can do other stuff like listening to Music or making a normal call using the Earphone, you might be facing software issues.

1. Check your Android OS version number. You can do that by navigating Settings > About Phone > Build Number / Version. There some issues with Android Version 4.0 (ICS). Make sure you are using the latest version.

2. Check your Skype version number. To find your Skype version number navigate to Applications / Apps > All > Skype. You can also go to Playstore to get the latest version of Skype.

Use a supporter Earphone and also update your Skype and Android. Hopefully that will solve your problem.
