Hello Simon,

As you've mentioned you are facing problem while printing or exporting drawing from ArcMap. There could be two reasons for this problem. Firstly, you should check the printer setup from ArcMap page set up to ensure that the printer context is suitable for the printer driver. Secondly, it can occur if the transparency contains in the layer which is being masked. In that case, you need to remove the transparency of the layer. Hope this could be a help.

Good luck.

Hello,

To solve your problem, you should consider three things: the number of masks, the complexity of the mask, whether or not the masks will be used to mask polygon features filled marker or line system. When these three things are used increasingly, printing or exploring can fail to produce valid results  because of limitations on how graphic file formats store map export results that contain masks. To improve your drawing and in order to troubleshoot this problem, you must simplify masks and minimize their use when masking annotations, convex_hull type masks are sufficient . For detailed text masses, use the exact_simplified type. If you will mask large amounts of text on relatively large maps, avoid using the exact type mask because it will lead to many complicated tasks.
