Hello dear friends,

It's me M. Smith. I am a student of MCS and a good one, but there is question in my mind and I want to get its solution. I tried my best, but have not found its answer yet. Kindly explain a major difference between Hard & Soft Real Time Systems with the help of an example.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Real Time Systems need to provide the desired output in the given amount of time. Hard Real Time Systems are those that guarantees critical tasks will be completed within specified time.

For example: You have a system of ECG where a patients pulse is seen on the monitor screen. The working of ECG is critical and hence it must show the desired output in the given amount of time; any delay in getting the output may lead to serious consequences; therefore the machine must guarantee to provide the output in specific amount of time.

Soft Real Time Systems are less restrictive. Getting the output in these systems are also important but not as critical when compared to Hard Real Time Systems. Here one task can get priority over other tasks.

For example: If you are using a real time system in a washing machine then the output of the system ( e. g buzzer alarm) is not so critical and it may happen that this system allows the washing machine to stop first before ringing the Buzzer instead of ringing the Buzzer before stopping the machine.

Hard Real Time Systems have less jitter than soft real time systems. When it meets it deadline dramatically, its a Hard Real Time Systems. It is a hardware or software that operates within the confines of deadlines. It is considered failed if the application does not meet its allotted time. This system includes components of anti-lock brakes, pacemakers and aircraft control system.

Soft Real Time Systems meet its deadlines. This system is built to reduce resource consumption. It is also more suited to a novel application such as telecommunication network, multimedia system, mobile robotics and monitoring apparatus. This system also tolerate overload and changes in system.
