Hello Brittany Williams,

No, you do not need to change the main exe program in order to change the icon in the shortcut menu. You will need an ico converter if your icon is an image file like jpeg, gif, png, etc. Your icon should have a 16×16, 32×32 and 64×64 in order for Windows to choose which one is the best to display.

Hope this helps.

The action you want to do with the game’s shortcut affect only the shortcut itself and not the main EXE file. The shortcut and the main EXE file of your game are two (2) different files. You can change the name of the shortcut and the icon to whatever you want.

As long as you don’t change the name of the main EXE file, anything you do with the shortcut will not affect the game. With the different files you see in the installation folders of different programs on your computer, it is not recommended that you change the name of an EXE file.

One reason is that there might be other processes or tasks that will require accessing that file. If you change the name of the file, other processes or tasks that will require access to the file will not be able to locate the file and will halt the operation thus triggering an error.
