I think all of the above mention freelancers are working. Here are some details regarding it:

1. Elance – This started in 1999 and developed for supporting virtual work. They have introduced the Vendor Management System or the VMS for contractors and other services which is mainly used for big enterprises. And so far they have reached 500K businesses so far and they have 2 million registered users. In Elance, you need to create your profile with your previous working experiences, feedbacks, portfolio, skills and your educational information. They have free and paid membership. Free membership has limited proposals every month while paid has additional proposals. And they offer a guaranteed payment for every project done.

2. Freelancer – This global outsourcing business place started in 2009 in Sydney Australia. And it works just the same as Elance. But they have membership plans from basic to premium. If you are an employer, you can post your online project in simple steps. Just post it, choose your bidder and then pay them. If you are looking for a job, you will act as the bidder and you can look for thousands of open jobs available daily.

3. Odesk – This site was founded in 2005 with the intention to hire and manage remote workers. Odesk is considered as the biggest online marketplace where once can make and fulfill work settings. Odesk is a short term for online desk where you can work at your own desk anywhere. Here, clients are allowed to make an online workteam.

4. VWorker – This started in 2001 as a virtual employment agency. It allows the company to outsource their projects and contractors to find jobs. It is also one of the largest marketplace in line with the above mentioned. However, Freelancer purchased vWorker in 2012. So it is no longer existing.

These online marketplaces earned by charging commission fees on successful projects based on hourly and fixed prices. And yes they are all genuine and operating legally. You can also try Guru that works just the same.

Hello Larry

Some of the sites you mentioned are active sites and they are legit, here is some insight on each one:

1. Elance – most of the sites are the same the only difference is the payment method and fee costs, Elance take 8.75% of the Freelancer earnings and can pay to a local bank (US only) , PayPal, Skrill and Payoneer.

2. Freelancer – in this site you have the option to start a Free account or to pay a monthly payment to get a better account, also the fee system is a little tricky here is the fee list, and it also deals with PayPal, Skrill, Payoneer and US bank withdraw.

3. Odesk – (my recommendation) this site has a fee on any project or task freelancer make of 10% but in return unlike other sites you don't pay monthly payments and you don't pay to take Exams to show your skills, this site also deals with PayPal, Skrill, Payoneer and US bank withdraw.

4. Vworker – this company was active till 12th November 2012 and then got purchased by Freelancer, no longer active
