Usually people do not see any difference between using the word notebook and laptop. But there is a difference. Simply saying I would say that the laptop is more powerful machine. But let`s see the difference:

Size difference: notebooks is smaller- usually the screen size is between 12" – 14" TFT, laptop is usually in these parameters- 14" – 17" (widescreen) TFT.

Battery life: battery life of notebooks is usually 4-5 hour battery life, laptops has battery life longer up to 3 hour+ battery life.

Graphic system: notebooks has graphics subsystem and laptop has NVIDIA GeForce or ATI Radeon graphics subsystem, so it is more powerful for home, made to have it on your lap.

Notebooks does not have no internal DVD or CD system and laptop has internal DVD-ROM or DVD-RW drive. Notebook has smallest possible keyboard that retains functionality and laptop usually provides large full featured keyboard. Laptop is unreadable and it has integrated modem, network, Bluetooth and WiFi capabilities. So, laptop is better to buy if you want to use your machine at home because it is more powerful and it has better audio and video quality system, as the word lap already reminds, it is made to use it on your lap, at home. You can buy notebook if you will not really need it for home-using. I hope it is helpful.

If you are running Linux on your computer and you noticed that it is slow, you should check the specifications of your computer if it is capable of running Linux. For the basic Linux Ubuntu desktop edition, installing it would require:

  • Intel Celeron or better processor at least 700 MHz or higher
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 5 GB of hard drive space
  • VGA monitor that can display 1024 x 768 screen resolution
  • CD/DVD drive

If you are using a different version of Linux and not Ubuntu, visit Ubuntu Documentation Community Help Wiki Installation/SystemRequirements to check for your operating system.

If there’s nothing wrong with the specifications of your machine then maybe you only need to do a defragmentation of your hard drive.

The best way to defrag your hard drive is by using Gparted or E4defrag. Visit for more information.

Greetings guys! All of your comments were very apt so thanks for your vital notion but Sharath your solution was head and shoulders much superior to me for your easy and free explanation. You have presented some tips that I required for basic Linux Ubuntu desktop editions which were unknown to me. You are given an exact specification for the system unit that compatible with the Linux OS. Your provided links were excellent as well visiting this link I have gathered much information and how I will defrag of my hard drive. After careful analyzing your comments now I am able to be successful at what I was expecting. Thanks Sharath as well Techyv too as an illuminator.
