Hi, dell hard drive error code 0142 indicates hard disk failure leading to a blue screen and the shutdown of the device. I would like to suggest to first create a secure backup of your laptop. The stated problem can be solved by simply updating the BIOS (basic input, output system) which is responsible for the flow of data throughout the device. Further, you can perform the following steps: –

Shut down the device remove all the components detach the hard disk and again connect it and run the full diagnostic test and restart the device.

Error code 2000-0142 indicates a failed self-test which can be caused by a problem with the connector or the cable. If a regular Dell desktop computer crashes and displayed that message on the screen, you need to check the cables connecting to the hard drive. You should shut down your computer first then open the CPU case to check the cables inside.

But since you are using a laptop, this is not possible. If you can still start your computer, try running chkdsk with a “/r” switch. If you were able to start Windows, click “Start”, “All Programs”, “Accessories”, and then “Command Prompt”. In the command prompt window, type without quotes “chkdsk /r” then hit Enter. The “/r” switch allows chkdsk to locate bad sectors and recover any readable information.

A post by one user in the Dell community website said that he has seen the “chkdsk /r” command worked though it may sound stupid. You should try it because it might work in your case.

I also have a problem when performing a diagnostic test on my hard drive on my Dell computer because the test also fails though I’m not sure if this is the same error code. In my case, it seems the cause of the failed self-test are bad sectors because I have 4 KB of bad sectors on my drive.

When my disk was still free from bad sectors, I never had this problem with the Dell self-test. If this method worked for you, download PC Tools Performance Toolkit. Follow the instructions to download and unpack and then install it. Once installed, start PC Tools then go to “Recovery” tab and select “Repair Drives”.

In “Repair Drive” screen, under “Select Drive Operation”, select “Surface Scan” then check “Perform on reboot”. Select your drive from the list and click “Start” and then “Continue”. Restart your computer to begin the test.
