The latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials supports Windows Vista and Windows 7 both 32-bit and 64-bit. It doesn’t support Windows XP, Windows 8.x, and Windows 10. Windows XP is supported on Microsoft Security Essentials 4.0 but not on Microsoft Security Essentials 4.5. Windows 8.x and later operating systems are not supported because they have their own security subsystem or antivirus called Windows Defender.

Windows Defender is also available in Window 7 but it is limited to spyware protection only. If you don’t have yet Microsoft Security Essentials on your Windows 7, head down to Security Essentials Download and download the version according to your system architecture. The page has a long list of supported languages so select the language you preferred.

If, by any chance, you have plan on upgrading to Windows 8.x or higher, Windows Defender comes pre-installed with these operating systems. On the other hand, if you no longer want to use these antivirus programs from Microsoft, you have to disable them first prior to installing a third-party security software.
