Over-charging occurs when the charger keeps the battery at a temperature that is warm to touch (body temperature) while in ready condition. Li-Ion laptop batteries have built-in controller chips which prevent it from overcharging, as they can explode if overcharged. But lithium-based battery should never be allowed to get warm in a charger. If you have this happen, the battery is no good or the charger is not working properly. Don’t continue to use the battery or charger if this happens.

A Lithium-ion battery may be damaged by extensive overcharging (continuously on a charger for more than 24 hours). Damage to the battery from overcharging would only occur in the very unlikely event of a malfunction of the charging system.

If your battery seems not to reach its full charge level then the device might already be defective. But to make sure that the battery is charged correctly, shutdown the laptop then remove its charger. Keep it turned off for a couple of minutes or maybe until it turns cold.

When the battery is already cold, insert the charger again to charge the laptop. Don’t turn on the computer. Just let it charge while it is turned off so that nothing else is using the battery while it is charging. The battery is usually full after an hour of charging or maybe more depending on the battery’s type and the battery’s remaining power before you charged it. See if the battery becomes full after this time. But if not, you might probably need to replace the battery with a new one.
