Compaq Presario V2000 Strange Keyboard Issue

I am having problems with my laptop's keyboard. My laptop is a Compaq Presario running a Windows XP Home Edition.

My problem is, whenever I typed something whether on the address bar of my browser or type anything on MS- Word or Excel, there is nothing on my screen except the cursor that keeps blinking as if it was waiting for me to type something.

Compaq Presario running a Windows XP Home Edition

I tried cleaning by brushing gently the sides of my keyboard thinking that there is just some dirt blocking beneath the keys and making it hard to type anything on the screen. But it didn't work.

Does anyone here knows how to make some adjustment on its settings? Or if it has something to do with changing the whole keyboard thing. Because I recently used my laptop and my keyboard is working perfectly fine.

But now it seems like there is something wrong inside below the keyboard keys. I tried using a plug and play external keyboard, the one with a USB thing. and it works.

My laptop is Compaq Presario V2000.

Processor: Intel Pentium M 710- 1.4GHz

RAM: 256Mb (Upgraded to 1Gb)

Hard Drive: 80Gb

Wireless: Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG WLAN

I hope you can help me.

Regards.

If your keyboard is not working you can try with one of the following things. Some times the problem may be due to the driver so make sure that you have the latest driver for keyboard installed on your computer.

You can visit the website of Compaq and download the latest version of the driver and install it on your computer. Before installing the new driver for your keyboard you should first uninstall the old driver of your keyboard . for uninstalling the old driver you can select the start button and then you can click on the control panel.

From the control panel you can select the device manager. You will then see the list of devices installed on your computer. There you will see the keyboard. You can select the keyboard and then right click and select the uninstall driver option. This will uninstall the old driver of your keyboard from your computer.

After that you can restart your computer. Then you can run the installation program of your downloaded driver. You can then check whether the problem has been solved.

Otherwise it should be a hardware problem. You can give your laptop to an authorizes service center of Compaq and then repair your keyboard or replace it with a new one.

If you apply a lot of pressure on your laptop keyboard then its sensors will get damaged, so you should be more careful while typing on a laptop, otherwise the keyboard will easily get damaged. Sometimes dust will get inside the keys and so the sensors will not work.

So if the problem is due to dust you can give your laptop to the authorized service center of Compaq. So they will remove the keyboard and clean it properly so that the dust will be removed.

One more thing you can do is you can shut down your computer and then remove the power code from the plug then you can remove the battery from the laptop and then you can wait for some five minutes then press and hold the power button for ten second and then you can insert the battery back into the laptop.

Then you can turn on your computer and then you can check whether the laptop keyboard is working properly. Sometime doing like this may solve the problem. So you can try this option also.

You can also try to update the existing driver through device manager. For that you can select the start button and then select the control panel. From the control panel you can select the device manger. In the device manager among the list of installed devices you will see the keyboard, you can then select the keyboard and then right click on it.

Then from the available options you can select the update driver. You must be connected to the internet while trying to update. This will update your device driver for the keyboard to the latest version. You can then check whether the keyboard is working properly.

The following steps are required to be followed for the cleaning and lubrication of the laptop keyboard once a year. It will take about a maximum of 2 hours. The steps are given as:

  1. Start by taking out all the keys from the keyboard along with the rubber piece present underneath the keys. Make the keys loose by using a small screwdriver and then take them out one by one. Keep the keys and rubber pieces in two different containers.
  2. After you take out all the keys from the keyboard the next step is to carefully clean the keyboard by using slightly water dipped cotton swabs or ear bubs. Make sure it doesn’t get too wet otherwise it can damage the keyboard. Now thoroughly clean the keyboard by rubbing the slightly moisten the cotton swabs. Care should be taken for the cleanliness between the key spaces.
  3. Now the next step is to clean the previously taken out keys from the keyboard. Use rubber foam dipped in lighter fluid for the cleaning of each separate key. It will help to remove any kind of sticky substance on the keys. Use any household cleaner on the keys and leave them for few minutes approximately 15 minutes. After this wash all the keys with a hot water and let them dry properly.
  4. Now spray a household cleaner on the previously taken out rubber pieces and rinse them in warm water. Use paper napkins to dry them quickly.
  5. Apply a light coat of mild lubricant on the keys from all sides by placing them upside down on a flat surface. Then leave them to dry.
  6. Similarly apply the mild lubrication on the keyboard surface and let it dry as well.
  7. After you cleaned and lubricated all the parts, it’s time to reassemble the keyboard. First of all place all the rubber pieces on the keyboard and then fix all the keys in their respective places by carefully securing the connecting key wires. Make use of your fingers to slightly press down all the keys to fit and adjust properly in the allocated slots.
