Hello there!

Can you please guide me…

I have a concern with my computer. I am using Ubuntu and I was just wondering why my CPU usage suddenly shoots up whenever I use Mozilla Firefox.

Sometimes when I watch videos in YouTube, my CPU usage runs around 100%.

I am basically just starting to learn how to use Ubuntu and Noob and I would relay appreciate it if you could help me fix my problem.

Thank you..

Hello there! You can do the following to prevent or work around the high cpu usage whenever you use Mozilla Firefox:

  1. Disable the javascript using the noscript extension. There are sites that causes high cpu usage because of extensive use in javascript.

  2. Update your Firefox and Flash. Older versions of it causes high cpu usage.

  3. Uncheck the compatibility mode in Firefox. It can cause high cpu usage if Firefox is set to run in compatibility mode for older versions of Windows.

  4. Some video cards and drivers can reduce the high cpu usage by disabling cursor and bitmap hardware accelerator. To troubleshoot your hardware acceleration, right click on desktop and select Properties > Settings > Advanced > Troubleshoot.

Hello user

CPU usage is the percentage of CPU speed at which it's operating relative to its maximum speed. 100 % means your CPU is running at top gear. If your CPU speed is 2.0 Ghz  then at 100% it is working at 2.0 Ghz, unless its temperature has risen above an optimum point. In which case the max speed of your CPU actually decreases to protect itself. Make sure your CPU is not over heating. You can use free software such as Core Temp to monitor CPU temperature.

Whenever you start a new application such as a browser the CPU usage will shoot up. This is normal. However if your CPU usage at 100% there could be a problem with it.
