Invalid file error when using windows media player

I am not able to use my Windows Media Player in playing my wmv video files. I have downloaded my latest favorite wmv video from the internet, but I was just disappointed that I could not play it with Windows Media Player.

But when I tried to open it with VLC it played so well. In WMP it just says that the profile is invalid, and I cannot open the file. I am just so confused why it played with VLC instead.

Please help. It will be greatly appreciated.

Error:

Windows Media Player

The profile is invalid.

This only means that your codec on your Windows media player does not support your WMV files. Try downloading the right codec to the version of WMP and try it again. When it comes to VLC, it usually comes built in so more likely you could play your videos there smoothly.

There could also be some licensing issues in WMP on your downloaded fie. To solve this:

1. Right click on wmv file->go to properties->license section (see if this has protected content. If yes, you are not allowed to play it.)

2. In Windows Media Player setting, go to tools->options->privacy. Try to uncheck the option and play the file.
