I have Office 2003, and I need to save files in the newer version of Office. What can I do? Will the MS Office compatibility pack help me? What else can I do with this package?

By installing the compatibility pack, you can edit, open and save files using the newer formats of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The compatibility pack is available for Word Viewer 2003, PowerPoint Viewer, and Excel Viewer 2003. The package can be used to view files saved in any latest formats. If the file contains custom XML tags, then it will be removed when it is viewed in Word 2003. Before installing this pack make sure you install all High Priority updates from Microsoft updates.

If you have Microsoft Office 2003 and you need to save files in a much newer version like in Microsoft Office 2007 format, unfortunately, there is no way you can do it without using a compatibility pack. One example is with Microsoft Office Word. In Microsoft Office Word 2003, this version saves the document in DOC format (.doc) by default.

In Microsoft Office Word 2007, the document is saved in DOCX format (.docx) by default. Microsoft Office Word 2007 can both open and save DOC files. This is the function of backward compatibility. Microsoft Office Word 2003 can only open and save documents in DOC format, it cannot save in DOCX format. To fix your problem, install Microsoft Office 2007 or higher.

Beginning with Microsoft Office 2007 onwards, all applications use or share the same format like with Microsoft Office Word, it uses DOCX (.docx); for Microsoft Office Excel, it uses XLSX (.xlsx); and for Microsoft Office PowerPoint, it uses PPTX (.pptx). If you have Microsoft Office 2003, download Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats 4.
