When I install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition on my PC an error message always appears. I restart my PC and try to install it again but the same error message appeared. But my colleagues install the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition in their computer without having a problem.

What should be the possible solution regarding to this issue?

Error:

The Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition installer returned error code '258'.

Maybe your operating system is not supported by the application you are installing. You should check first the system specifications of the software before attempting to install it on your computer. Let’s just review the system requirements of the program to better understand what’s causing the error.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition supports Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, and Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition also requires installing Microsoft Installer 3.1, and Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. If you haven’t installed these yet, install Microsoft Installer 3.1 and Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 first before proceeding on installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition to avoid further installation problems.

Because after launching the installer of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, the setup wizard will try to look for these two (2) components first. If they are already installed then the process will continue but if only one of these is installed or maybe they are not yet installed, the operation will return an error code which will then stop the installation.
