Hello all,

I have been using outlook for ages now with no problems at all then yesterday I opened it while not connected to internet and an error message regarding .pst file? Saying I should repair it but I have no idea how to do this. What the hell is an inbox repair tool

Luckily, I had only just backed up so I copied over that file and it seems fine again now I was just curious as to what exactly the problem was so I can address it in the future should if I need to.

Any help is appreciated!

Cassandrajnorman,

Hello,

In Outlook, when trying to access personal folders, there might be an error message displayed that. The .PST file is not accessible. This error might occur in case the index of .PST got damaged. Sometimes this problem will not solve even scanpst.exe is run. Scanpst.exe is an outlook Inbox repair tool which is used to recover items from corrupted personal folder i.e. PST and offline folder i.e. ost.

It is automatically installed along with Microsoft outlook and is located in different paths based on the outlook version. In order to tune the Inbox repair tool, close the outlook and search for the scanpst.exe using find or search option in start menu. Once the scanpst.exe is located on your system, run the .exe file with a double click. Enter the path where the .PST file is located and click on start.

But inspite of the availability of such repair tools, it is always good practice to take frequent backups of data from any applications. The same is applicable for Outlook too.

Answer: The inbox repair tool is also called the Scanpst.exe. It is installed by default together with your Microsoft office outlook. This executable file is used to repair your corrupted or damaged .pst file. It is conveniently located at the Microsoft office folder. After you found the inbox repair tool, you can now open it and then browse onto your .pst file. Click the start button and let the Scapst.exe scan the .pst file for possible errors. After scanning, you will see how many the errors are and the Scanpt.exe will prompt you to repair these found errors.

When repair is finished, a recovered version of the file will be available and Outlook will ask you to repoint it to the newly recovered version instead of the corrupted version. In case that the inbox repair tool is not enough to fix the errors, you are to use a more powerful repair tool, which can be the Stellar Phoenix .pst file Repair Utility. Same process goes with this application so you need not to worry.
