IMac didn’t detect my external hard drive

My external hard drive “Western Digital 500GB IBook” recently began to cause my IMac to run real slowly, forcing me to eject it. When reconnecting it, it would intermittently not mount, but when the power to the drive was disconnected and reconnected, it would (stubbornly) mount.

Recently it has refused to mount, I used "Disk Utilities" to try to correct it, but even though "Disk Utilities" detect the drive but it doesn't let me select the "Verify Disk" or "Repair Disk" buttons.

Please Help!!!

It is possible that your disk is not working now. The controller is still working but the reading process is not. Maybe the pin is broken inside if your hear some screeching sound from it, because what you did is you forcibly eject it and unexpected ejection of the hard disk is not good for it. It is just like the normal Hard Disk that needs proper ejection to stop it properly.

Try plugging it to someone's computer and see if its only your computer that can't read it, but if there is nothing to do anymore, call for a technician and have it looked. I think they know much better.

Note: If the warranty is still available, have it replaced.

Hello Merry,

Looking at your problem I guess your file system is corrupted. So the first thing you should do is to repair your drive. I would suggest you to try DISKWARRIOR if you have it. It will help you repair and detect your drive easily.

Also if you are connecting it through USB then I would suggest you to replace your USB Cable and check if the new cable works detecting it? Once you do that Reboot your MAC and am sure it will detect the hard drive.

One more thing is that Is your Hard Disk compatible with the OS that you are using? I would suggest you to check it out with MAC and if the HD is incompatible you'll have to upgrade it and am sure it will work. Good Luck.

Thanks!!
