IM is the short form of Instant Messaging. It is the kind of online chat that provides real time text transmission on the internet. LAN messenger also works the same way but its functionality is only limited within the local area network. Here, short messages are normally sent bi-directionally between two persons where the user needs to compose a message first and then click Send to send the message.

Most IM clients nowadays have the ability to use push technology to give real-time text. Here, the messages are transmitted character by character as you compose them. There are also more advanced instant messaging clients that feature VoIP or Voice over IP, file transfer, clickable hyperlinks or URLs, and especially video chat.

PM is also known as Private Message. It is a personal message very similar to an email sent from one user to another in a forum site, BBS or Bulletin Board System, social networking sites like Facebook, or in chat rooms like IRC or Internet Relay Chat. Messages like these are more anonymous than the usual email message.

Because this type of message doesn’t provide the sender’s IP address and email address except to moderators and administrators only.
