What does a vocoder for pc do? A vocoder was originally intended to capture the essence of speech without digitizing, for transmission at lower bandwidths (less bytes needing to be transmitted), but then, how well will you recognize the original voice after decoding an encoded voice? Does the vocoder do encoding and decoding? Or is it just used as a vocal modifier for music songs these days (perhaps after encoding and then decoding again to see how it changes)?

Hi,

A Vocoder for PC will change or process sound and make it more intelligible. There are features that the original voice has before encoding it, and all you have to do for you to get the original voice is to filter the features or decode them. The Vocoder normally encodes and decodes sounds. However, the Vocoder for PC does not have as many features as the other vocoders used in places like studios, and so it may lack some features.

Basically Vocoder is an analysis system that for which reproduces human speech, since it gets the input voice as an analog signal and it transmits it to a digital signal to be used with modern systems and communications system , to lower the bandwidth usage with the same error (biterrorrate) in modern digital communication systems. Vocoder transfers the speech from analog or dump digitalised through a simple quantifier. To low bit rate data that can be sent easily. Or even stored. That is due to the fact the speech can be modulated as an error signal which is produced by the cords and a filter that represents the vocal track. The error signal goes through the vocal track to produce the sound that we hear.

What vocoder does is that it gets an approximated coefficients of the filter and the error signal and store them in finite No. of bits. The vocoder encodes the speech in a few bits that represent the error signal and the vocal track filter. And the vocoder track decoder decodes this back to the original speech by inputting the error signal to the filter that were produced by the encoder.



The encoder and the decoder of the vocoder have the same bit combinations. So when the decoder receives a code , it can decipher it to the original speech.

This is used in digital phones and in communication systems . Storing sound files in a compressed way. Such as LPC vocder , CELP, and some others. LPC is the method of obtaining the filter and error signal coefficients from the speech by using an adaptive filter.
