It is really not suitable to say that there is the best type of antivirus software for your machine in the industry because viruses keep becoming more resistant. However there is a list of the top five antivirus programs as of 2012. They include:
 
1. Bit Defender Antivirus: An easy to use antivirus best known for its Versatility, effectiveness and simplicity. It is however very bulky on the resources used
 
2. Kaspersky Anti-viruses
 
It is well known for protecting PC against new threats and is a strong antivirus and very straightforward. It is however very pricey

Easy to use but it is missing some of the new features like laptop mode.
