I have a desktop computer with Windows Vista. My problem is that I am unable to install/uninstall software or programs. My system is not too old but still each time I try to install/uninstall any program, I get the error message:

Error 1606: Could not access network location %APPDATA%

If anyone got any idea about the error message then please help me as I have tried my best to solve this problem but failed.

First of all, %APPDATA% is not a network but it is a system wide variable. %APPDATA% is a directory on your computer. For Vista users it is C:UsersyourusernameAppDataRoaming Regarding your problem, I think the application is having problems locating it. A space in the user name shouldn't be a problem, but creating a new user may fix the problem because it will create the account with default registry settings which will hopefully have the missing %APPDATA% information.

Sometimes the error also occurs while trying to install an application which uses Windows Installer, which appears because of false registry value types. Following are the steps to repair this error 1606:

1. Go to “Start”; open the “Run” dialog and type Regedit.exe in Run dialog

2. Navigate the following command: HKEY_CURRENT_USER

3. Now, click the “Recent” option twice, which appears in the right-panel and arrange its data to: %Userprofile%Recent

4. Exit the Regedit.exe and reboot Windows. So, all the incorrect registry values can be corrected through these steps.

It is a windows system registry error which can be because of some VIRUS which is infecting your system registry values or may be they are changed by some other program. So in this case you can run a full virus scan on your PC to make it error free.

Also you can set it manually by taking these steps:

  • Go to START and then click on RUN and there type "regedit"  by clicking ok a new window will open in front of you.
  • Go for the following registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders
  • Now from here you can delete the path showing the message of error or you can delete error message from her.
  • After you done click ok

I hope this will not only solve your problem but will also help you to maintain your computer.
