I installed Windows XP SP2 and put it on auto update as usual. Everyday it installed updates normally but then I noticed some problems with I system. I thought this could be due to automatic installation and so I put automatic updates to offline mode. And I started receiving error “0X87FF054F”. I Google a lot for this but could not find any reason and the solution as well for this error.

I am using Windows XP, as mentioned with 512 RAM and 2.4 GB Processor. Anyone knows solution for this error then please tell me.

This error occurs when an automatic update is disabled. You may face this error while installing Windows XP SP3 due to some internal error. This could also be a problem with the “Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)”. “BITS” is a service which uses idle bandwidth network to send and receive files, such as Windows updates and MSN updates.

So if the BITS service does not work in this error, then there are problems in the installation of Windows XP SP3.

  1. Click on start and select run.
  2. In the run dialog box, type “Services.msc”.
  3. There will be a list in front of you. Look for Windows Automatic update service and check if the service is disabled. If yes then enable it.
  4. Now perform same steps for BITS and look for in the list. Then in the startup type select automatic.
  5. Click Apply and then click on start.
  6. Wait for sometime for the BITS Properties to start and then click OK.

After you have performed these steps, restart your system now you can install Windows XP SP3.

Hi,

  • The error pop-up when doing the update and is an internal error on windows.
  • You have Windows XP SP2 and your computer should upgrade to Windows XP SP3 but the feature for Automatic update is disabled.
  • To prevent this error, steps below are the guides for you as reference.
  • click Start, then select Run
  • In the Run box, type "Services.msc" and hit enter key
  • You have to look for "Automatic Update" service and that should be started.
  • If not, you need to highlight it, and click on the button Start the service.
  • This has to be set to Automatic by right-click service.
  • It s under the startup type, select Automatic
  • Hit OK and Apply.

These steps should get rid of that error message away.
