Hello there.

Generally, manufacturers has proprietary security applications available for certain models of storage media (flash/hard disk, etc).

The idea is to encrypt the data in the storage media, access only allowed with a password.

This WILL NOT, however – protect your disk from formatting inadvertently or not. SD cards has a "lock" notch to prevent writing/format/deletion of the card contents but USB flash drives and hard disks do not have this feature in general.

The "buffalo format lock" you mentioned may be referring to BUFFALO Secure Lock Ware; they are bundled with the relevant Buffalo products.

Other major companies such as Sandisk and Apacer may also have similar applications. Perhaps you would like to try some third-party applications to protect/encrypt your data.

USB Lock Standard by Advanced Systems International is one such utility.
