Hello guys,

How is tif related to raster? I just want to know all the separate features of these file extensions for they are related to each other. How they interconnect when it comes to internet capabilities and how fast they can be rendered in any converting software and applications? I hope you can discuss some of this with me.

Thank you.

TIF is the short form of Tagged Image File format. It saves 8 or 16 bits per color for 24 and 348 bit totals respectively using the TIF filename extension. It is flexible and gives good lossless compression for images. It is however not widely supported by web browsers.

TIF is just one of the raster formats. Others include:

  • JPEG
  • Exif
  • RAW
  • GIF
  • BMP
  • PNG
  • WEBP

Raster images file size is correlated to the image’s color depth and pixel numbers. Compression is through an algorithm and can be de-compressed back to the original format.
