How to swap a mobile phone chip

Hi,

Is it safe and possible to switch the chip inside a BlackBerry Pearl to a similar mobile phone?

I have a Pearl which has some cosmetic issues and my friend has the same phone that she is willing to give to me because she upgraded long ago. I was told I could swap the chips and still have my contacts and media. Is this true?

I don't want to cause any damage to the phone or the other chip or break any wires inside the phone. Is it simple enough that I can do it myself?

Thanks.

Hi! Shelly,

It is generally safe and very much possible to switch the chip between different/similar phones. This chip that you are referring to is more popularly known as a “SIM card”.

This chip can store important information such as your contacts and media files that you want to retain. However you have to make sure first that your contacts and media files have been stored in the SIM card and not on the phone that you have been using.

So just make sure that the files that you want to keep are all stored in the chip and all set to transferring this to your other phone. You don’t have to worry about any damage when transferring the SIM card as you can definitely do this yourself.  Just follow these simple steps and you’ll be good to go.

  1. Gently press down the release button on the battery cover of your BB Pearl.
  2. Remove the battery cover and the battery itself so that you can see where the SIM card is.
  3. If there’s still a SIM card, carefully remove it by sliding it outwards.
  4. Make sure that you place your chip correctly. The cut off corner of the chip should be towards the top of the phone and the metal contacts on the chip should be facing down.
  5. If there’s no SIM card inside, place your chip on the SIM card holder and just slide it inward until it stops.
  6. Insert the battery, making sure that the metal contacts on both the battery and the phone device are aligned.
  7. Replace the battery cover until it clicks into place.

Hope this resolves your problem.
