How to safely install Service Pack 3 in Windows XP?

I have installed Windows XP Home Edition on my computer, without the Service Packs. My friend told me that one must have SP1 or SP2 installed before installing SP3 when running Window-based system. I’ve also read different information regarding this matter. Some say that slip streaming is the only way to go directly from XP-SP0 to SP3. Other people say that one must have SP1 or SP2 installed before installing SP3. So can anyone tell me which of this two is the most effective and safe solution? I only have one shot in doing this using nLite 1.4.8. So I really need your assistance. Please help me.

Hi there Jedah,

You have to have XP SP1a or XP SP2 pre-installed BEFORE you can safely install SP3 in your computer. I suggest you download SP2 from here.

and install it before you can proceed to SP3. It is also the most effective and safe solution to have rather than slip streaming from XP Home Edition to SP3 since it already has most of the updates from SP2.

Now before we continue, these Service Packs only applies to 32-bit versions of Windows XP and I assume your OS is already 32-bit. So let's continue, there are steps to consider before we install XP SP3 in your computer such as doing a full backup of the files that you have on your computer to an external location such as DVD or External Hard Drive since we are talking about safe keeping :).

Also keep in mind that once you installed XP3, that if you are using IE7 or IE8 in your previous OS, you cannot revert it to IE6. If you like using IE6 you have to uninstall your IE7 or IE8 before proceeding to SP3.

I hope this helps and lem me know if there are problems that occurred during the installation.

Thanks, Apaullo. I already have SP 2 Windows XP so I bought SP 3 Windows XP. I reboot from CD by pressing F5. ( first, I checked that I have all the backup files). I formatted the hard drive by choosing Quick Fat format where I am going to install SP 3. And the next steps are very easy, just click next, next, and done!. Thank you very much.
