Whenever I try updating the Pivot Table using the Refresh Data key, I kept on receiving the error message saying “Reference is not valid”. Is there anything I can do to refresh the data?

Is the refreshing key you are using F5? I will advice that you unplug the keyboard and plug it in again, maybe it has just frozen.
Otherwise try closing the application that you are using for updating the pivot table and then launch it again. Ensure that when pressing the refresh key on the keyboard which should be F5 you are not holding down other keys at the same time, because you may be using a key combination that does no have really exist.
