How to recover Windows Log-in Password?

I am running Windows XP Professional and put a password for logging in to Windows. I went for a vacation and did not have the chance to open my computer for a few months. And when I get back, I realized that I installed a password and forgotten it completely. I want to know how I can recover it again or how to reset it. I can’t continue with my desktop since I have to log-in first and input my password.

Please help me.

HI Kim Jenkins,

Good Day. On Windows XP, when you forget the password, there are 3 ways to retrieve it.

First: This is only applicable if you did set a hint beforehand:

  • On the log-in screen, click on the question mark next to the arrow button. Then there will be a hint given to you. You must think relevant answers to the hint provided. If correctly answered, you will be logged in.

Second: If all else fails:

  • Login as the Administrator by pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL twice. An old login style will appear:

User: Administrator

Password: (leave it blank)

  • Once logged in, click on MY COMPUTER then selects MANAGE.
  • On the left hand side: select LOCAL USERS AND GROUPS then USERS.
  • On the right hand side: Login Name will appear, right-click and SET PASSWORD.

It seems that your computer has another user account. So login to that user account and follow the steps below:

  • Click on ‘Start’ button.
  • Click ‘Run’.
  • In the ‘Open’ textbox type ‘control userpasswords2’. Please don’t enter quotes there.
  • Click ‘Ok’.
Now Windows XP opens the ‘User Accounts’ dialog box. Select your username from the list appears and click on ‘Reset Password’ . Enter a new password and confirm it by retyping in confirmation box. Click on ‘Ok’ button.

Now your password has been changed. Logout from the current user account and try to login to your account using the new password.

Hi,

You can reset your local account password in Windows XP by following these steps:

Insert a blank CD/DVD or USB Flash drive into the computer to create a password reset disk. Select CD/DVD or USB then click Burn to start the burning process.

3. Once the password reset disk is successfully burned Quit. Take out the password reset disk and insert into the locked computer. Reboot or reset your computer with the CD/DVD or USB inserted. If your computer cannot boot from it, set the BIOS to boot from it.

This always happens as we are always required in putting a case sensitive type of password so that no one can easily access our computers. You can reset the password if:

A. You can still log on as the Administrator so that you can assign a new password to your account. To do this, you must follow the steps below:

For Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional Edition only:

To log on as the Administrator to reset a password on your computer, follow this:

1. Log on as the Administrator.
1.1 Restart your computer.
1.2 Press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice, and then type the name of the Administrator user account.

*If you are unsure of the Administrator user account, type Administrator in the Username box.

1.3 Type the Administrator Password and then click OK

*If you are unsure of the Administrator password, leave it blank and then click OK.

2. Reset your password.
1.1 Click Start and then Run
1.2 Type control userpasswords2 and then hit OK
1.3 Under the Users tab, click the user account name that you intend to reset the password and then click Reset Password.
1.4 Type the new password and then type it again to confirm and then click Ok.
1.5 Restart your Computer then try logging in again.

B. You have created a password reset disk for the computer before. To do this:
1. Use a Password Reset Disk.

For Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional Edition only.
1.1 Restart your computer.
1.2 On the windows log-on screen select the username that you want to use then press Enter.

You will receive a pop-up balloon box with the following message:

Did you forget your password? You can click the "?" button to see your password hint. Or you can use your password reset disk. Please type your password again. Be sure to use the correct uppercase and lowercase letters.
1.3 Click Use your password reset disk and the password reset wizard will start instantly. This will allow you to create a new password for the selected username.
1.4 Click Next in the password resets wizard.
1.5 Insert the password reset disc and then click Next.
1.6 Type the new password in the box, and then type it again to confirm the password.

You have many options to resolve this issue. Choose any one of the followings:

  1. You can use a Win XP recovery disk to reset password. But this is only available if you have done this before forgotten Windows XP password. It is very easy and simple to create a Win XP password reset disk. It will help you to reset XP password, while most of the users don’t know this.
  2. Here is another option is available to fix the problem. Boot your computer and press F8 repeatedly to start In Safe Mode. You can log on with the built-in Administrator user account and reset your lost password to this account, In case you didn't change its password or can access it.
  3. You can use other accounts with administrator rights. If there is still another user account which you remember has administrative privileges, you can use it for Windows XP password recovery.
  4. Try to reset Windows XP password with free utility such as John the Ripper.
  5. Or Burn a CD/DVD to recover lost Windows XP password.
