I want to protect my MS Publisher file with a password so that no one except me could open it.

MS Publisher do not support password protection.

But, you can protect  it by using following steps:

Best way to protect your MS Publisher contents is to convert it to ZIP file and then give password to this to this file. Later on, you can extract the content and then you can use it.

Another way to protect your MS publisher file is to convert it into Word file and then giving password to it.

You can also convert MS Publisher file to PDF and encrypt it to protect from others.

Passwords in Word file is very weak. So, it is recommended to convert your Publisher file to either ZIP or PDF and then giving password to it.
