Hi. To learn how to open an Excel file that is password protected, first find the password protected Excel worksheet on your PC. Click on view and then mark the option next to file name extensions in the Explorer window. A .xlsx extension will appear for your file. Next, this .xlsx extension needs to be changed to zip. As soon as the extension is changed, a warning that the file will become unusable will be given by Windows and you need to click on continue to proceed with the procedure. After this, the zip file needs to be right-clicked and then you need to select the option of extracting all the files because of which a new folder will get created in the current location with the name as that of the Excel file. Next, click on the xl folder to open it and then the worksheets folder. All the sheets contained in the document will be displayed. Then, the worksheet which is locked needs to be right-clicked on and then edited.

Then, search for sheetProtection in the find window. Everything that appears within the brackets need to be selected and saved in a notepad file and closed. Copy the edited file and then double-click on the zip file to open it. Then, open the folder named xl and then the worksheets folder to find all the original worksheets present there. Paste the file which has been edited by you so as to overwrite the current file. Rename the zip file back to the Excel file extension. Now, open the worksheet and start working on it without using a password.

Hope we helped.

In Microsoft Office Excel, you can set a password for a particular file to protect its contents from being accessed and modified by unauthorized users. When a Microsoft Office Excel file is protected with a password, it will prompt you for a password when you open it. Now, if you want to disable or remove the password from the file, you have to open the file first.

This means, you must first know what the password is before it can be disabled. Now, to disable the password from the file, open Microsoft Office Excel then open the password-protected file. When you are prompted for the password, enter the credentials. Once the file is opened, click the Office button or “File” then select “Save As” or just press F12 to bring up the Save As dialog.

In the Save As dialog, click “Tools” on the bottom left corner and select “General Options”.
