My Xperia Z tablet came with 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and I've been trying to update the software version to Kitkat. If I click refresh software, it tells me my software is up to date, but I know I can upgrade to Kitkat. Can I manually download and update the update to my phone?

Changing the phone's operating system, or even upgrading to a newer version although it is not specified by the producer if the phone is capable of such upgrades, is illegal and it will deny your warranty and any service support from the company.

The Xperia Z tablet has the Android 4.2.2 operating system installed because the hardware that it uses is compatible with the software that OS delivers. Changing the operating system to a newer or older version will cause problem between the hardware and the software communication.

Also, changing the operating system will require you to root you phone. Rooting your phone means installing a software that will grant you special access to it's hidden settings. Also, rooting you phone is dangerous, and if not done correctly, you can permanently damage your phone and make it unusable.

If a phone has been rooted and damaged and then sent to the company's service support center, then they will void your warranty and make you pay full price for the damages that you have done to the phone.

The solution is to not under any circumstance change the tablet's OS.
