First, you need to download Ubuntu Linux 10.10 from Ubuntu official website. It will downloaded in your harddisk in ISO file format. Then you'll have two way of choice to install Linux Ubuntu 10.10 on your PC. First choice is you can install by making a bootable CD. For that, you have to burn this ISO file into a cd by using a burning soft. Which support ISO file format for burning the CD.

Then you will ready to install you Ubuntu 10.10 from the bootable cd. When the installation in going on you will see it mentions a path where you want to keep the operating system. Then all of you have to do, just mention the path as your flash drive.

Then complete the installation. Hope it will help.

Hi,

This is a common problem with Ubuntu and you've got to be careful as you follow these instructions;

Just Insert the 2 GB USB, select your flavour you want to install (probably i386 10.10) and point it towards the .iso you have downloaded. Make persistent by checking the box (will allow saving of programs/ changes).

Edit: FYI you will still be prompted to either try or fully install. It doesn't add much time on other than if you wanted to switch on the pc and go make a cup of tea. Then it will just wait for you to select an option rather than just boot to the desktop.

Thanks.

You will need the ubuntu 10.10. ISO image that corresponds to your hardware architecture (i386 or amd64), and that can be downloaded from https://www.ubuntu.com/. When the download is over, burn the ISO image with your favourite CD/DVD burning application (Nero, CDBurnerXP, Roxio) on a blank CD at 8x speed.

Reinsert or leave the CD in your CD/DVD-ROM device and reboot the computer in order to boot from the CD. Hit the F8, F11 or F12 key (depending on your BIOS) to select the CD/DVD-ROM as the boot device. Wait for the CD to loading. In a couple of minutes you will see the wallpaper and the installation wizard. Select your language and click the "Install Ubuntu" button to continue.

I am writing the procedure in steps,

1. You must have an UBUNTU disk.
2. Start Install process.
3. Prepare disk space and guide the path. (USB).
4. Now wait till the UBUNTU work on installation files.
5. After installation put off the disk from the ROM and restart the computer.
6. From the BIOS menu choose boot from USB and the window will come in front of you.
7. You should have a minimum flash drive of at least 2 GB or 4 GB recommended.

Using these steps you can easily install the UBUNTU in your flash drive and can access from any PC.

How to install Ubuntu Linux on a flash drive:

  • If you want to do updates and upgrades you should do a "Full" install to the flash drive.
  • Is your ISO install even persistent? I mean does it save changes?
  • I think the ISO file is frozen and not easily modified, you cannot upgrade the kernel.
  • You can make a ISO install persistent using a persistent partition, (casper-rw) or with a persistence file by the same name.
  • For a 16 GB flash drive I would suggest the "Full" install.
  • Disable your internal HDD insert the Live CD, plug in the flash drive and run install after booting.
  • Use manual partitioning to keep a FAT32 partition as your first partition so you can save stuff to it from a Windows computer.

Hi,

I am Raisa. Here is your solution. For installing Ubuntu 10.10 you need follow this process.

First you have to install UNetbootin in Windows or Linux Systems. You can download from this. Here is the link:

After installing now its time to choose distribution and continue. Then you need to select the USB drive and click OK.

You should wait for some time for the download to complete.

Then click Exit. After that, Remove the USB Drive and insert it into the PC without CD/DVD drive and boot from it.

Then You have to configure your computer to boot from Removable devices. Then press the F-2 or Esc on the keyboard when your computer is booting up. UNetbooyin should automatically boot and begin installing Ubuntu.

If install Ubuntu 10.10 on portable flash drive you can installed it in the recommender way that the website instructed you to do (using USB universal installer).

But Ubuntu is having trouble in the main menu where it freezes when it ask you "try Ubuntu first or install Ubuntu".

You have to go through this window every time Ubuntu boots from your flash disk and it literally adds 20 minutes to the boot time.

You should have at least a 8 GB flash drive, but it can be installed in 4 GB but you will be constantly housecleaning and cannot load very much additional software.

Grub will default to installing to the sda MBR, you have to use manual partitioning and choose where to install the boot loader.

It does not have to be encrypted:

Standard full install to flash or SSD:

More discussion Dec 2010:

Use ext2 or ext4 without journal:

Tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/sda1

No swap or set swappiness

After installing, change the fstab so that everything gets mounted with noatime.

Change to noop i/o scheduler

You want journal to speed up system recovery if you have to do repairs or run fsck. But if partition is small then it does not take long to fsck anyway and without journal writing is reduced.

Hope it can help.
