Regarding your question, I am not really sure if I get your problem correctly but here is a simple solution I could give you. Firstly, try to look up at the top menu. Hit "File" then "Reset". Here is another solution, try to delete the file (3dsmax.ini) if you are using Windows. For another note, in case you are not using Windows Vista, delete the “3dsmax configuration settings" in your Application folder and with this, it could reset your settings to the default one. If it still can't be reset, try another option which is to go to your customize settings and click Load Custom UI Scheme and hit default and this can lead you back to your original settings.
