Hey mary,
You can check and repair system files with the system file checkers. SFC (system file checker) is a command line utility that is used to examine and repair all essential operating system files. In order to run system file checker in safe mode kindly follow the below mentioned steps.
1. Go to start-all programs-accessories-command prompt.
2. Right click on command prompt and click on run as administrator.
3. Type the sfc /scannow command in command prompt.
4. Press Enter.
