Hello Ruthprobertson,

Hope you are having an antivirus installed to your computer. If not then you have to install an upgraded one. There are a couple of free anti viruses like Avira, AVG, avast and more Or you can better still buy one Like NOD 32, Kaspersky or Norton those are good ones. Download and install one of them. After installations ensure your computer is connected to the internet so you can update the program. To do that, open the antivirus program and click the update button.

After the update is through disconnect the computer from the internet. Most of the problems that cause the problem of a virus filling a computer hard drive are because the virus keeps downloading stuff and other junk files from the internet. After all these are done, open your antivirus program and click on scan so as to clean your computer. Turn off the computer afterwards. Turn it on again and while doing it this time press hold the F8 key so your computer boots this time in safe mode.

This is to ensure in-depth cleaning. After all these processes, you can then restart your computer, connect your internet and your computer is ready for use again. Make sure you are having a good and updated antivirus program always running in your computer to avoid such incidents.

Eliminating viruses from your drive, be it removable media or your hard drive requires actual removal of all files from the drive. Follow the following steps to get rid of those viruses and other mal-ware.

1. If you have files you wish to keep that are on the infected drive, copy them manually and save them elsewhere.

2 From the start menu, navigate to MY COMPUTER. This will display disk drives connected to your computer.

3 Choose the drive you want to clean up/remove viruses entirely.

4 Right click and choose format from the menu which pops up. This will delete all files from the drive.

Use a drive-wiper such as C-Cleaner which you can download from http://www.piriform.com/ and permanently delete all files. That should leave your drive as good as new. You can then scan any files you wish to save on the 'clean' drive with anti-virus software before saving them to avoid having to go through the same process again.
