I just got a new HTC dot view smart cover. I have seen the rise of smart covers for various brands during the last few years. I have a question concerning these covers. How does it pick up the data? How does it manage to lock the smartphone? In other words, I want to know a bit more about the workings behind smart covers

Smart covers are used to protect the smartphones from damage.

Working

Proximity sensors are present on every touch screen phone.

When an object is brought near it, the proximity sensor senses it and locks the screen.

For example, when you are on a call, you take your phone near your ear. Proximity sensor senses the presence of your ear and locks the screen so that nothing on your phone gets activated by the touch of your ear.

Similarly, when you place the flip of your cover, it triggers this sensor and your screen gets locked.

The magnet in your smart cover is used to keep it in place.
