I am trying to use my new Apple Laptop to scan for WiFi spots. I running Mountain lion and I have no clue on how to find hot spots any kind souls out there would could help.

The icon, with the not so round red circle around it, on your computer will show you what networks there are.
When it is gray you are not connected to a network and when it is black you are connected.
To view Networks click on this icon at the top of your screen and it will show you a list of networks.
If you don't see anything tell it to refresh.
If you still don't see anything you are either not near a usable network or your wifi card on your mac is broken.
