Hi there.  I have a broadband internet connection using a Motorola SURFboard SB5101 cable modem which can allow 30 Mbps internet speed.  How can I prevent intruders from accessing my MAC address using a cable modem MAC scanner?  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi Helenmarmstead,

I think your broadband internet connection is good for you, and you want to use it securely from intruders. For this you can take some steps:

1. Don't use Bluetooth or wireless connection.

2. Never share your line with others.

3. Never tell someone your password or username,

4. Use cable and get a good USB protector like Folder Guard

5. Use an initial password.

I hope those tips will help you lot.

Hello Helen,

Your MAC can easily be compromised by a scanner. What you should do is increase network security, make sure windows firewall is turned on, adding a router to your network will increase security significantly as the router itself has its own hardware firewall. If you have a router plugged to the network give only guest passwords for visitors, never give them the password of your main SSID as this will increase risk in network security breach.  Backup and encrypt sensitive files.

Thank you,

Luz M Terry
