How do I mute my iPhone?

I am very new to Apple products, so I am sorry if this question seems silly. I cannot seem to be able to mute my iPhone. I enable the mute switch, but it still makes noises and sounds.

Is there something wrong with my phone, or am I using the wrong setting?

Hi Alex,

No problem is silly, the important thing is you let go of ignorance and embrace knowledge.

There are two options to mute your iPhone device. First, when you get phone calls. And second, your device's speaker.

Let  us go back to the first option. This is basically on a single call basis, you can simply tap on your screen "mute". This is located to the most upper left part of the screen, together with the icons of "keypad", "speaker", "contacts", "face time/hold" and "add call". You can easily see this as it appears on your screen whenever you got a phone call. This is a way for you not to be heard by the person you are calling.

The second option or turning your phone speaker into silent mode can easily be made by simply clicking the button which can be found at the top left of your device. However, your iPhone may still ring via music player, alarm clock, applications and etc. To ensure that no sound will be produce by your device, click the "-" button found at the left side below the "+" button and make sure that no bars for sound will be left.
