Hallo Maxine,
The exFAT, or otherwise known as the Extended File Allocation Table, is a modified version of the FAT file system which is a product of Microsoft, and it uses less overhead as compared to the NTFS file system. This file system extends the maximum size of the file of 4 GB that the FAT system uses to a virtually unlimited capacity.
The exFAT file system is part of the Microsoft embedded version for the Windows operating system, and also part of the windows client. Microsoft has not stopped licensing FAT as well as exFAT to the parties that are interested in using that file system.
Regards,
Carl
