You don’t need to actually download a program to convert Office Excel files (*.xls) to plain text (*.txt) on your Mac. If you only have a few files to convert, you can easily do it within Microsoft Office Excel. It’s as easy as doing a Save As. You can save it in “Text (Tab delimited) (*.txt)” or “Unicode Text (*.txt)”.

To do this, start Microsoft Office Excel then load the Office Excel file. Next, click File or the Office button then select Save As. An alternative is to press F12 on your keyboard.

After this, in “Save as type”, select “Text (Tab delimited) (*.txt)” and click Save.

The saved text file can be opened in Notepad or any applications that support text files. The text file should look something like the image below.
